Faith Steps
At Riverdale Church we encourage our children and teens to engage in a process of Faith Steps. We consider it a privilege to partner with parents in their God-given role as the primary spiritual nurturers of their children. Faith Steps offers three distinct experiences that mark & celebrate spiritual growth & decisions.
We also encourage a regular commitment to a learning opportunity with their peers at Riverdale and we are happy to offer suggestions to aid parents in establishing family devotional times at home.
As students grow in their faith these meaningful Faith Steps are encouraged:
Meeting Jesus (recommended for children grades K - 3)
Children meet Jesus as they and their parents participate in learning sessions around the Lord’s Supper. At the conclusion of this experience, children celebrate their First Communion in a congregational worship service. This experience is especially appropriate for children grades K-3.
Professing Faith in Jesus (recommended for students grades 4 - 12)
A regular opportunity is made available for students to think seriously about their faith and excitement for Jesus Christ and to profess that faith before the Lord and in the supportive presence of their church family.A retreat or other learning opportunity is offered to encourage students to think about where they are in their faith,their understanding of Jesus and their relationship with Him. At the conclusion of this process students are encouraged to take the important step of a public profession of faith. Making a Public Profession of Faith is not an ending, but a beginning! After a student makes a commitment, we help them acquire the tools needed to go deeper. The Professing Faith in Jesus opportunity is offered annually or as participants in the student body are ready spiritually.This Faith Step is typically offered to students in grades 4-12.
Join the Church (recommended students grades 9 and above)
Students exhibiting growing spiritual maturity and indicating an invested interest in deepening their walk,having “Professed Faith" and had appropriate training in the previous step,are identified and encouraged to take yet another step and actively join Christ’s Local Body and the covenantal community, assuming all the responsibilities of membership that come with spiritual maturity. (This is the step in which the official PCUSA membership process takes place.)A retreat or other learning opportunity designed by the Director of Student Ministries in consultation with the Pastor is offered as part of this Faith Step.A public profession of faith in accordance with the polity of the PCUSA will be administered in a sanctioned worship service.This opportunity is offered annually or as participants in the student body are spiritually ready. Faith Step culminates with an official examination by the Session of Riverdale Church and a celebrative worship service where students are officially welcomed into the membership of Riverdale Church. This Faith Step is typically offered by invitation to students in grades 9-12.
